About
Àlex Cassanyes Sabater, (Capellades, Barcelona, 1982). Composer, arranger and bandleader with an ambitious and distinctive personality that takes shape in his instrumentation and contemporary vision that gives his works a particular sound and affinity.Àlex is a multi-award-winning composer and arranger who has received top international honors on five occasions. His notable accolades include winning 1st Prize at the Copenhagen European Bigband Composer Competition (2013), Italy’s Barga Jazz Competition (2014), the SGAE arrangement competition in Granada (2014), and Finland’s Esko Linnavali Composition Competition (2019). Most recently, he won 1st Prize in the Tower Jazz Composers Orchestra Competition in Ferrara, Italy.He leads the Àlex Cassanyes Big Band Project, releasing the album The Garden of Eden (2018) and collaborating with singer Anna Roig on the French-chanson project La Tendresse. In 2021, he released Composició II (UnderPool) and had his music recorded by the German NDR Bigband. A two-time participant in the US ISJAC symposia (2017, 2019), his work has been praised by Maria Schneider.Àlex trained under renowned masters including Duccio Bertini, John Hollenbeck, and Florian Ross.He is currently the Head of the Composition Department at ESEM - Taller de Músics, and teaches at both ESMUC and the Escola de Música de Vilafranca.
